Mahant Gyandasji on Shri Ram Mandir in Ayodhya

Ayodhya, May 22 (ANI): The convener of the ‘religion protection organization’, Mahant Gyandas, has triggered a fresh controversy in Ayodhya by saying that the Ram temple will be built in the city.

He said a final decision about what approach to take for fulfilling the Ram temple dream will be taken in March 2010 when the saints from across the country will gather in Haridwar to take a dip in the holy Ganges on the occasion of ‘Maha Kumb’.

“It will be a battle till the end. Whatever we do, but the Ram temple will be constructed. If Ram temple is not constructed in Ayodhya, where will it be made, not in Mecca-Medina. This belongs to us and we should get it. It belongs to the Hindus and Ram temple will be made,” Gyandas said.

He added that the Hanumangarhi temple would be the new center for struggle to make the Ram temple.

His statements have triggered fresh tension in the area.

Reacting to Gyandas’s statements, Mohammad Hashim Ansari the complainant in the Babri Mosque demolition case said that the stones for the temple construction should be kept where they are and till the time the judgment of the court is not given.

“If the nation wants a secular government then the mosque should be made where it originally was. If instead of the mosque temple is constructed then history will have to be repeated,” said Ansari.

Ayodhya’s Police Superintendent Gyaneshwar Tiwari visited the Mahant Gyandas’ residence to enquire about issue. (ANI)

Hanuman Garhi - Ayodhya

Name : Hanuman Gadhi

Location : Situated in the center of Ayodhya, this temple is approachable by a flight of 76 steps.

Legend : It is said that Hanuman lived here in a cave and guarded the Janambhoomi or Ramkot. The main temple contains the statue of Maa Anjani, with Bal Hanuman seated on her lap. The faithful believe that all their wishes are granted with a visit to this holy shrine.

Hanuman Gadhi is located in a fort situated at the western gate of Ram Kot as a place of watchman. Hanuman ji, (a brave devotee to Lord Ram) is considered (on the basis of mythological faith), the Kotwal (watchman) of Ayodhya city.

King Vikramaditya constructed this temple of Hanuman ji. After a period Nawab Mansoor Ali constructed a fort around the temple through Tikait Rai which is now famous as Hanuman Gadhi. In this temple, golden idol of Shri Hanuman ji in the lap of his mother Anjani is established.

For the management of Hanuman Gadhi, there are four arrays of saints named as Haridwari Patti, Basantia Patti, Ujjainia Patti and Sagaria Patti. They have their own Chief as well as a principal Chief who is known as Gaddinashin.

At present, Mahant Shri Ramesh Das is Gaddinashin. In this temple, anniversary of Shri Hanuman ji is celebrated with great enthusiasm.

A massive structure in the shape of a four sided fort with circular bastions at each corner houses a temple of Hanuman and is the most popular shrine in Ayodhya.

Special prayers in Varanasi on Mother Ganga's birthday - Friday, 1st May ( Vaishaakh Shukl Paksh Saptami )

Varanasi, May 2 (ANI): Special prayers were organised on the bank of Ganga River in Varanasi marking the birthday of the river.

People performed prayers by offering milk to River Ganga on Friday and pledged to stop the pollution of the river. According to the organiser of the Gangotri Welfare Committee, Kishori Raman Dubey, prayers offered to prevent the river from getting further polluted.

"The condition of Ganga River has worsened. The river is drying up and has almost turned into a drainage. To retain its lost glory, we decided to celebrate its birthday every year," said Dubey.

Legend has it that on this day, Goddess Ganga descended from heaven onto Lord Shiva's matted locks and then flowed onto the Himalayas.

The Ganga runs its course of over 2,500 kilometres from Gangotri in the Himalayas to Ganga Sagar in the Bay of Bengal through 29 cities.

In 1996, the Supreme Court had banned the discharge of effluents from various tanneries and factories located on its banks in Kanpur.

However, with one billion tons of waste being dumped into it everyday, the River Ganga unfortunately remains to be one of the most polluted rivers. Pl offer your earnest help in terms of your time and presence on the banks of Mother Ganga for selfless service for the mankind.

May you be blessed by Mother Gangaa !

Varanasi Banaras Ganges River

The land of Varanasi (Kashi) has been the ultimate pilgrimage spot for Hindus for ages. Often referred to as Benares, Varanasi is the oldest living city in the world. These few lines by Mark Twain say it all: "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together". Hindus believe that one who is graced to die on the land of Varanasi would attain salvation and freedom from the cycle of birth and re-birth. Abode of Lord Shiva and Parvati, the origins of Varanasi are yet unknown. Ganges in Varanasi is believed to have the power to wash away the sins of mortals

Ganges is said to have its origins in the tresses of Lord Shiva and in Varanasi, it expands to the mighty river that we know of. The city is a center of learning and civilization for over 3000 years. With Sarnath, the place where Buddha preached his first sermon after enlightenment, just 10 km away, Varanasi has been a symbol of Hindu renaissance. Knowledge, philosophy, culture, devotion to Gods, Indian arts and crafts have all flourished here for centuries. Also a pilgrimage place for Jains, Varanasi is believed to be the birthplace of Parsvanath, the twenty-third Tirthankar.

Vaishnavism and Shaivism have co-existed in Varanasi harmoniously. With a number of temples, Mrs. Annie Besant chose Varanasi as the home for her 'Theosophical Society' and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, to institute 'Benares Hindu University, the biggest University in Asia. Ayurveda is said to be originated at Varanasi and is believed to be the basis of modern medical sciences such as Plastic surgery, Cataract and Calculus operations. Maharshi Patanjali, the preceptor of Ayurveda and Yoga, was also affiliated with Varanasi, the holy city. Varanasi is also famous for its trade and commerce, especially for the finest silks and gold and silver brocades, since the early days.

Varanasi has also been a great center of learning for ages. Varanasi is associated with promotion of spiritualism, mysticism, Sanskrit, yoga and Hindi language and honored authors such as the ever-famous novelist Prem Chand and Tulsi Das, the famous saint-poet who wrote Ram Charit Manas. Aptly called as the cultural capital of India, Varanasi has provided the right platform for all cultural activities to flourish. Many exponents of dance and music have come from Varanasi. Ravi Shankar, the internationally renowned Sitar maestro and Ustad Bismillah Khan, (the famous Shehnai player) are all sons of the blessed city or have lived here for major part of their lives

Varanasi has been a centre of learning and civilisation for more than 2000 years. Kashi and Benares are the other names of Varanasi but its present name is the restoration of an ancient name which means the city between two rivers — Varauana and Asi.

The old city of Varanasi is situated along the west bank of Ganges and extends back from the river ghats in a winding collection of narrow alleys. Areas such as Chowk, Lahurabir and Godaulia are just outside the vicinity of the old city. These areas can also be described as shopper’s paradise for the sheer variety of things that are available. However, if you’re not too careful you might fall prey to some stall owners whose goods are exact the opposite of what they are made out to be!

After a delicious lunch of Missi Roti, Sabji and Dal Makhani, the next afternoon we headed towards the Ramnagar Fort. It is the home of the Maharaja of Benares and was built way back in 17th century. The fort has massive walls and magnificent gateways flanked by high towers. It is at its most impressive when viewed from the river while boating. The museum ingeniously displays a vast collection of silver and brocade palanquins, swords, guns, clothes and jewellery depicting the different phases of colonial history.

The next day as dawn was breaking, myself and my brother decided to go for bathing in the Ganges — Varanasi’s capturing attraction. A long string of bathing ghats lines the western bank of the river. Ghats are the steps which lead down to the river where pilgrims take dip into its holy water and perform pooja in the rising sun, offering cups of candles, flowers and incense which float down the Ganga. The best time to visit these ghats is at dawn — the city becomes alive and the exhilarating breeze welcomes everyone.

Varanasi Banaras Ganges River
There are a total of 100 ghats. After taking a dip in its sacred waters we decided to have an enjoyable boating too. Hence we started our trip from Dasaswamedh ghat which is the most convenient starting point. A trip from there to Manikarnika ghat by boat made an interesting short introduction to the river! We were informed that the Asi ghat, the furthest upstream is one of the five special ghats where devotees are supposed to bathe. Many of the ghats were owned by Maharajas or other princely rulers.

The Dandi ghat is the ghat of ascetics known as Dandi Panths and close to that is a very popular Hanuman ghat. Kedar ghat is a shrine popular with Bengalis and South Indians. Manasarowar ghat was built by Raja Mansingh of Amber and is named after the Tibetan lake at the foot of Kailash Peak. The Munshi ghat is extravagant and situated amidst picturesque surroundings whereas Ahalya Bai’s ghat is named after the Maratha woman ruler of Indore.Varanasi Banaras Ganges River
These ghats are an ideal place for relaxation — which freshens up the tired minds, body and soul! The Ganga aarti in the evening in respect of goddess river Ganga is a unique experience in itself. Fast moving flames, resonance of sonorous music of bells and hymns sung by devotees at the backdrop of the gushing river create a mesmerising effect.

Varanasi is the birth of bliss. It is renowned the world over as an abode of saints and sages. It is strewn with beautiful temples for devotees such as The Golden Temple, Tulsi Manas Temple, Sankatmochan (Hanuman) Temple, Durga Temple and Bharat Mata Temple.

Dedicated to Lord Viswanath (Shiva), the golden temple is one of the most ancient temples in Varanasi. It is known for its architectural and historical splendour as it is for its sacredness. The present temple dates back to 1776 by Ahalya Bai of Indore and the gold plating on the towers were provided by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Lahore

I’m a Gandhi, a Hindu and an Indian: Varun Gandhi

I’m a Gandhi, a Hindu and an Indian

I’m a Gandhi, a Hindu and an Indian

An unrepentant Varun Gandhi asserted Wednesday that he was a "Gandhi, a Hindu and an Indian" in equal measure and said the CD showing him making an inflammatory speech was doctored.

"I am proud of my faith, and am not apologising for it," Varun Gandhi told reporters while reading out a written statement, a day after being slapped with a criminal case for his alleged hate-Muslim campaign speeches.

"I am a Gandhi, a Hindu and an Indian in equal measure and my attempt was not to spread ill-feeling against any community and I stand by all religion and all faiths," said the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) candidate from Pilibhit constituency in Uttar Pradesh whose provocative speeches stunned everybody, including his own party.

"I am a victim of a political conspiracy... Those are not my words, that is not my voice. I want to ask the nation to stand by me," Varun Gandhi said.

Calling himself a proud Hindu, the 29-year-old said since the announcement of parliamentary elections, his constituency, vacated by his mother Maneka Gandhi, had been witness to communally provocative incidents.

"No action has been taken against thousands and thousands arrested under the National Security Act. Three temples have been vandalised in Pilibit and several village pradhans (heads) have been threatened.

"Slaughtered remains of cows have been found in several houses in the area and arms have been smuggled to be used against India."

He said his attempt was to restore confidence among the community in Pilibhit "which is under siege in its own country".

Girl gangs with a Noble Cause

http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/feature/girl-gangs-with-a-noble-cause_100166590.html
Girl gangs with a noble cause:

This can’t ring more true when it comes to empowering young adolescent girls in rural India.

What began as self help girl group, a unique concept taken up by UNICEF Lucknow, today is one of the most powerful tools young adolescent girls are using to protect themselves against exploitation and fight for their rights.

Called ‘Kishori Sabhas’ or ‘Samuhs’ these groups are so popular that they have even managed to do away with practices like child labor and child marriage in the villages.

How was this possible?

According to experts at UNICEF and the NGOs working to promote the concept, they had just decided to launch it as an initiative to combat girl child exploitation . But little did they realize that it would turn out to be more than that.

Not only has Kishori Sabhas managed to empower young village lasses who were forced to live a life of subjugation by their male dominated societies but it has also turned into a role model to be replicated in most villages needing to be shaken out of the orthodox social system they are living by.

Sample this: When Aarti and Ranu took the lead in forming adolescent girls group in the village Reechpura Birdha, a small district in Uttar Pradesh they pledged that they would not allow any girl to be married before she is 18 years of age. So when 16 years old Rajbai, a fellow student of theirs was being forced into marriage at an early age the Kishori Samuh girls intervened. The girls decided to meet Rajbai’s parents and urge them to postpone the marriage. As a back up plan if the parents did not pay heed to their request then the girls decided they would lodge a complaint in the nearest police station. A step that was never taken till now by anyone in their village until now. The girls mustered enough courage and met Rajbai’s parents and told them that their daughter is not ready for the marriage and she would like to study instead. They further argued that child marriage is illegal and Rajbai is only 16 years old, she can get pregnant and early pregnancy will endanger the life of both the mother and the child. The argument the girls gave to their parents was so strong that they were forced to give in and call off the wedding.

While that may have sounded easy to do, things are not so always for the feisty girls who have come together to form such adolescent groups. Committed to their cause they not only campaign and educate each about their rights but take a stand against the family and the village social system aswell which does not always meet with success. But do the girls groups give up? Read on.

A ten member group of the Ambe Kishori Samuh, at Lalitpur UP was up against all odds when they tried to call off the wedding of their underage friend. 16 year old Angoori, the official secretary of the group, announced that her family has fixed up her marriage and the groom’s side had also printed invitation cards for the ceremony. The girls reached Angoori’s house and met her father, but the meeting failed to draw any positive response from the family. But they tried again approached Angoori’s house and so forceful were these girls that despite being a difficult decision the bride’s father called off the wedding.

But what makes these Kishori Sabhas unique is the fact that after they campaign against the marriage of the underage girls they also provide monetary backup to those families who cannot afford to send their daughters to school.

Explains Sanjay Sharma of Sarathi Development Foundation a NGO working with these groups, “The girls are taught the importance of a savings and are motivated to open up accounts in which they save as little as Rs 10 per member. This money is then used to support the education of any underprivileged girls in the village. The Kishori Samuhs have been facilitated from within the community it has gradually built up their analytical skills, knowledge and capabilities to communicate effectively with their parents, community and service providers . The 735 Adolescent girl groups have proven their capabilities not only in integrated village planning but have also mobilised their families for behavior change in prevention of early child marriages, exclusive breastfeeding, adequate nutrition to girl child, enrollment and retention of girls in schools and their mainstreaming for further education, accurate knowledge on HIV/AIDS and hand wash practice.”

Adds Vasudev, Block Coordinator of the Bal Bandhu Programme which selects and trains the girls to form Kishori Samuhs, “In 2007 when we started the forming Kishori Samuhs we knew that the problems to be addressed ranged from lack of education in the villages, iodine deficiency, child marriage, infant mortality etc. So we were on the look out for girls who were confident, believed in changing the existing the system and had good convincing powers. Once the groups were formed the change they brought in the system is unbelievable.”

The added plus of such a community initiative has been its utilisation in Meerut, a city which has grown to acquire a dubious reputation as a flourishing hub for child trafficking. The only fool proof way to combat this trend, the NGOs working to prevent child trafficking feel has been setting up of Kishoris Sabhas in villages.

Explains Atul Sharma, Director Sankalp, an NGO working to bring down child trafficking for use in sex trade in Meerut, “Since children are the easiest to target the traffickers are making the most of the limited enforcement to develop a flourishing business of buying and selling children in Meerut due to its strategic location.”

But Atul maintains that they have been able to manage the situation owing to the adolescent girl groups that are functioning in Meerut and its surrounding areas. “ The Kishori Sabhas was developed as a target group of young girls for whom it would serve as a platform of information sharing or discussions both on personal and educational issues. As these girls have been taught to make healthier choices and resist negative pressures to avoid risk behavior, now even if a known person encourages them to indulge in anything that they know is wrong the young girls resist it. They also serve as a bank of informers to us if a girl has been bought or sold by traffickers thus enabling us to rescue her immediately.”

Organised every fortnight the Kishoris Sabhas has been running successfully in 32 villages in Meerut, Hastinapur, Mawana and other villages vulnerable to child trafficking. It has also helped educate girls about their legal rights and laws that exist to protect them.

Indra, a 65 year old group coordinator who was among the 64 coordinators selected in 32 villages in villages around Meerut district, calls it a ‘god sent’ initiative. She runs a Kishori sabha from her home and has empowered many young girls through it.

“I have seen how girls are treated like a piece of land here in Hastinapur, even if we wanted we could not raise our voice against it. Our daughters were forced into mis-matched marriages, forced for feoticide against their wishes and some were even sold off for money and we could do nothing but silently watch them suffer. But when I was contacted by a NGO in Meerut and they expressed their wish to start a Kishori sabha in villages to help women bond and get empowered, I instantly applied for the post of group coordinator. Since then my home is used as a sabha meeting place and the results are phenomenal. I am glad young girls are being made aware of their rights and no longer can be exploited.”

Agrees Rekha, a group coordinator who works with Indira and is responsible for answering queries through the little girl talk that most girls are curious about as adolescents.

“I have been rebel my self and married my brother-in-law against my parents wishes due to which I have had to face a lot of harassment by my own family and the village society. So I understand what a young girl has go through if she speaks her mind or expresses her wish in matters related to marriage and education. Through the Kishori Sabhas I now counsel them about these matters and help them make decisions that will benefit them, instead of falling prey to unscrupulous people out to exploit them.”

Among one of the favorite group coordinators, Rekha is sought out by girls ready to make the transition into adulthood as well. “Through the Kishori Sabhas sex education is also provided which has made it powerful knowledge forum in making the adolescent girls more self reliant when they step into adulthood. The girls in the villages are no longer vulnerable as they are aware of risk involved, sexual exploitation and harassment at home or outside and speak up against it. The sabhas have also helped us sensitise women about AIDS and STDs apart from other health hazards as well.”

Adds Rajib Ghosal, Child Protection Specialist, UNICEF UP, “The best way to target a issue and prevent a problem is to motivate the community to turn into vigilant groups based on voluntary action. These self help groups not only have a higher success rate in achieving the desired aim where projects and schemes been launched for the welfare of the community have failed. In fact the Kishori Sabha s have been able to bring almost a 80% reduction in child marriages in the villages they have been launched in. In Meerut too the initiative worked when it came to child protection and that too with no financial strings attached. A completely voluntary effort the response the girl groups have elicited is way beyond our expectations which has fortified my belief in community being the real harbingers of change both in attitudes and mindsets.”

Mar 15, 02:42 am

Kolkata to Varanasi by River Cruise !!! ( from 26th Sep '09 )

Dear Everyone,

Jai Maa Gange !

Very exciting news about a historical beginning or River Cruises in Bhaarat.

KOLKATA: After years of neglect, the mighty Ganga is set to become a tourist hub. A UK-based tourism company is promoting a cruise from Kolkata

to Varanasi.

The first trip is scheduled on September 26, with 56 British passengers enrolling for the 10-day voyage, said Amrit Singh of UK-based TransIndus. The first leg of the trip that will begin from Kolkata is titled Europe on the River'. It will cruise to former Dutch, French and Portuguese colonies.

Tourists will also sail to historic locations like Plassey, Murshidabad and Kalna in West Bengal, Sarnath, Rajgir and Nalanda in Bihar and finally Varanasi or Benaras in Uttar Pradesh.

Tourism consultants say the potential of river tourism here far exceeds that on rivers like the Thames, Sienne, or the Volga. "None have such diverse culture, history and heritage to offer along an 800-mile journey," said Manor Floatel MD and CII chairman (West Bengal tourism panel) Manab Pal.

"The Centre has granted Rs 20 crore for creating jetties, toilets and landscaping at the 12 ghats along the route. The Rs 130-crore heritage cruise project will be finalized by this month. Three large and several small vessels will offer cruise packages along the Hooghly by mid-2010," tourism minister Manab Mukherjee said.

The state tourism development corporation has begun upgrading its four cruise vessels, Madhukar, Sumangal, Sarvajaya and Chitralekha.

Slaughter houses re-opened at Varanasi

Published: February 6,2009

Varanasi , Feb 6- A day after their closure, all the three slaughter houses of the city have been re-opened flouting all the pollutions norms.

The district administration and the Municipal Corporation authority had on Wednesday sealed three slaughter houses in Beniabagh, Kamalgaraha and Ramala on the directive of the Pollution Control Board after a long drawn process as they were not following the pollution norms. According to the sources, after the sealing of the slaughter houses, some people met PWD Minister Naseemuddin Siddiqui regarding this and in no time the minister issued a directive to the Municipal Corporation to submit a report to the Board seeking permission to re-open them. The Board gave permission to reopen them with a condition that the district administration should search a site for slaughter houses outside the city.
